Constitutional amendments meet demands of all political powers, civil society
20/1/2007

The youths of the political parties sent a message to President Mubarak hailing the People's Assembly's (PA) initial endorsement of the constitutional amendments proposed by President Mubarak. They asserted that the amendments are important step, being a turning point in the political life which may support Egypt's position toward leading the reform march in the Arab world.

The youths of the National Democratic Party (NDP), el-Wafd, Tagamu, el-Ghad and the Democratic People Party (DPP) noted that the amendments meet most of the political powers' demands and achieve more of the parties' proposals, intellectual trends and civil society and human rights organizations and take into consideration the citizen's aspirations and hopes.

Mahmuod Aly, the workshop manager, said the proposed amendments boost the national march and achieve the balance between the institutions. These amendments will limit the president's powers and give more competencies to the cabinet. The amendments would grant the People's Assembly real supervision on the government's performance plus annulling the socialist articles given that they are not in line with the Egyptian reality and grant legislative competence to the Shura Council.

Dr Adel Essmat, human rights expert said the amendments put the citizen at the top of the constitution, boost citizenship and its values being the basic of the homeland's stability.
