Sherif: No place for religion-based parties

Egypt's National Democratic Party (NDP) Secretary General Safwat el-Sherif said no religion-based parties would be allowed to be set up in light of the partisan pluralism Egypt enjoyed in order to maitain national unity.

During an NDP committees meeting on Tuesday16/1/2007, Sherif said President Hosni Mubarak used his constitutional right as cited in the 189 article of the constitution.

He noted that Mubarak's call for amending article 76 in 2005 opened the door for national mobility and paved the way for such amendments which went in harmony with the president's electoral platform.

Under the amendments, judicial monitoring on elections is required, said Sherif, noting that people's interests were above any other considerations.
