Shura Council Speaker: Referendum day landmark in Egypt's history

Shura Council Speaker Safwt el-Sherif assessed Monday's referendum on constitutional amendments "a historical day and a landmark" in Egypt's legislative reform march.

Addressing the Shura Council's session on Wednesday, el-Sherif said the people had their say, supporting the constitutional amendments proposed by President Hosni Mubarak's electoral platform.

"The President was right when he said the real winner is the Egyptian people, Sherif added.

The future will prove President Mubarak resolve to honour his promise to make citizenship an umbrella under which all Egyptians will be treated on an equal footing, the Shura Council speaker noted.

He added that the coming days would also show that freedom of citizens will not be encroached upon and will be protected under law.
