Egyptian parliament approves 19 constitutional amendments
The People's Assembly's Constitutional and
Legislative Committee approved late Sunday the amendment of 19
constitutional articles.
The committee agreed to amend articles entrenching the principle of
citizenship as well as the establishment of political parties on religious,
gender or ethnic basis.
Other amended articles relate to the freedom of economic activities,
private property, social justice and the rights of workers.
The committee also okayed amendments to the conditions to run for the
presidency.
Lawmakers will resume their meetings on Monday under Speaker Ahmed
Fathi Sorour to debate the amendments to other 15 articles.
Some of the independent MPs have boycotted the committee's meetings.
