Shura Council resumes discussions on constitutional amendments

The Shura Council Committee on Constitutional and Legislative Affairs resumed on Sunday discussions on amending Article 34 of the Constitution affirmed the importance of judicial supervision of elections through the establishment of a higher electoral commission.

Addressing the session, Speaker Safwat el-Sherif said a new terrorism-combat law ensuring Constitutional public freedoms was being prepared.

Sherif accused opponents of the new law of failing to heed the security and safety of their nation and of seeking to only protect their own personal interests.

State Minister for Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Councils Moufid Shehab said the new law would serve as a compromise between the civic law and the emergency law.

What really matters here is that the new law would be under the supervision of the judicial authority, and this is the most important guarantee of freedom and security, Shehab said.
