Speaker of the Shura Council: Constitutional amendments in the interest of citizens

Speaker of the Shura Council Safwat el-Sherif confirmed that the proposed constitutional amendments target the citizen's interest, as it means strong parliament, the people to choose its representative in free will for the first time in Egypt. And, the parliament to discuss State's budget, for parliaments were established to review budgets, incomes and installments, besides to change government.

On his press statements on 24/02/2007, Sherif said that President Mubarak asked the amendments of local administration units to give them more constitution-supported authority, particularly the financial matters.

Sherif said that the president asked that the proposed amendments must comprise an electoral system that gives other parties a big chance for existence. Our political system is a multi-partisan one. This is in addition to women balanced share in the parliamentary seats. President Mubarak demanded a constitutional support to any electoral system at any stage; individual, list, proportional list, absolute list.

Sherif added that there are many ideas, but the important thing is to render constitution as a support to any electoral law at any system that gives women appropriate and accepted parliamentary seats.
